PROVO — Voter turnout was mixed but remained low in Utah County, punctuated by the ouster of several council incumbents, two council members turned mayors and one mayoral incumbent who lost as a write-in.
Woodland Hills Mayor Nile Jensen, who was eliminated in the primary, decided to run as a write-in. According to vote totals, Jensen managed to gather nine votes. City Council member Toby Harding was elected mayor.
In Pleasant Grove, the new mayor, former City Councilman Jim Danklef, won over his opponent, Dan D. Shaw, by only 26 votes. Pleasant Grove had a 32 percent voter turnout.
Voter turnout was also lean in Springville and Santaquin, with 20 percent and 29 percent of voters turning out, respectively.
Among the leaders in voter turnout was Lehi City, where 60 percent of the registered voters cast ballots, and Eagle Mountain, with 54 percent voter turnout.
Voter turnout in Utah County's two largest cities was also on the low end, with Orem reporting 38 percent and Provo City with 26 percent.
The new mayor in Alpine is Phil Barker, a city councilman who ran unopposed in the primary. He was challenged in the final election by Wayne Hardman who gathered 474 votes to Barker's 623.
A total of 33 percent of voters in American Fork turned out to re-elect all of the incumbents. Ted Barratt beat challenger Phyllis Crookston by 957 votes. City Council members Juel Belmont and Don Hampton retained their seats.
Cedar Hills council incumbent Doug LeDoux apparently lost his position by only 10 votes to Rob Fotheringham. Melissa Willie won a spot on the council as well.
In Highland, council incumbent Gary Phillippi lost his seat to newcomer Brian Brunson. Gwyn Franson retained her seat.
In Mapleton, City Councilman David Jensen will leave the council at the end of the year. Jensen ran for mayor, rather than his own seat and lost to Dean Allen, 737 to 641.
