Most colleges and universities in Utah and at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, offer financial assistance to top students in the Deseret News-KSL TV Sterling Scholar Awards program. Some scholarships are offered only to winners, while other institutions may offer scholarships to runners-up as well.
Some financial assistance also is offered to finalists or even nominees in the program. Scholarships may be renewable based on the student's grade-point average. The following list names participating educational institutions and their financial assistance for 2001 Sterling scholars.
Brigham Young University, Provo — One-year (two-semesters) full LDS tuition scholarships to all winners. Each scholarship is valued at $2,940. Runners-up will receive one-year (two-semesters) half LDS tuition scholarship, valued at $1,470, contingent upon admission to BYU by the appropriate deadline and in good academic standing.
Utah Career College, Salt Lake City — Scholarship of full tuition to all winners and runners-up for one academic program valued at an average of $20,000. This scholarship may be added to other awards.
College of Eastern Utah, Price — A two-year, full-tuition waiver and Sessions Honor Hall Housing Scholarship to all winners, valued at $4,476. Also, a two-year full-tuition waiver valued at $2,276 to all Sterling scholars and runners-up named from their high school. Tuition waivers contingent upon recipients maintaining 15 credit hours per semester and a 3.0 semester GPA.
Dixie State College of Utah, St. George — One-year full-tuition scholarship offered to all high school winners, valued at $1,188; and a half-tuition scholarship offered to runners-up, valued at $574. Scholarships are renewable sophomore year if students apply and meet eligibility requirements.
LDS Business College, Salt Lake City — One-year full LDS tuition to winners and one-year half LDS tuition to runners-up. Also, full LDS tuition to runners-up in Business and Marketing Education.
Ricks College, Rexburg, Idaho — Full tuition scholarships worth $2,180 will be offered to all winners, and one-year half-tuition, worth $1,090, will be offered to runners-up. However, the scholarship recipients cannot receive more than full tuition for one academic year.
Salt Lake Community College, Salt Lake City — Winners, runners-up and finalists in each category will be offered a full-tuition scholarship (12 to 18 credit hours) for two semesters in an eligible program, valued at $1,362. Recipients must enroll in a minimum of nine credit hours (scholarship amount based on tuition for enrolled credit hours). Students are required to pay individual fees. Scholarship may be added to other awards. This scholarship may be renewed by application, by maintaining a minimum 3.5 and by adhering to academic standards as outlined on renewal application.
Snow College, Ephraim — One-year tuition scholarship to winners and runners-up, with each scholarship valued at $1,084. Fees are not included.
Southern Utah University, Cedar City — Regional winners will receive a full-tuition scholarship for the first year if a 3.5 GPA is maintained. Scholarships are renewable. The recipient must maintain a 3.9 GPA for a full tuition and a 3.7 GPA for a half tuition to receive the scholarship for the remaining years.
Stevens-Henager College of Business, Provo — Partial tuition scholarship for all high school nominees for either the 10-month diploma or associates degree, valued at $4,000.
University of Utah, Salt Lake City — A one-year, two-semester tuition waiver, valued at approximately $2,500, will be offered to any winners. Recipients are responsible for individual fees and must enroll for a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester. Students are invited to apply for freshman merit and departmental scholarships by Feb. 1.
Utah State University, Logan — Winners will be awarded one year of tuition (two semesters). Runners-up will receive half tuition for one year. Sterling scholars must have a general scholarship application on file by Feb. 1. The Office of School/College Relations must be notified by May 15 of any Sterling Scholar Awards. To renew this scholarship (tuition only) for a second year, students must have a USU cumulative GPA of 3.80 after fall semester.
Utah Valley State College, Orem — A one-year full-tuition waiver (fees not included) will be awarded to winners. The same award is available to winners at the high school level, but this scholarship is non-renewable. The award is contingent upon receiving a scholarship application and an application for admission to UVSC by Feb. 1. Recipients must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 each semester at UVSC. Approximate value of each scholarship is $1416.48. Recipients may apply for a continuing-student scholarship for the second year.
Weber State University, Ogden — Winners will be awarded one year of tuition, valued at $1,670. Runners-up will receive half tuition, valued at $835. Sterling scholars must have a general scholarship application on file by Feb. 1. The Scholarship Office must be notified by May 5 of any Sterling Scholar Awards. Recipient must maintain a 3.5 GPA. To renew this scholarship for a second year, students must have a WSU cumulative GPA of 3.9 after fall semester. Students must reapply in the Scholarship Office by Feb. 1 each year.
Westminster College, Salt Lake City — Renewable full-tuition scholarships to all winners, . Renewable half-tuition scholarships to all runners-up. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA to renew the scholarships for up to four years. Full-time enrollment is required. Students who have been awarded a Presidential, Deans or Westminster Scholarship and are also a winner or runner-up in the Sterling Scholar regional competition will receive the scholarship worth the most.
NOTE: Awards are listed as described by the institutions. Exact amounts are not included due to some changes in fee structures, and some restrictions may apply. Applications must be made immediately; the scholarships are good for the 2001-02 school year.
