Dr. Maryl Lynne Winningham, age 53, passed away February 18, 2001 at her home in Salt Lake City, UT after a battle with cancer. Her life charac-terized her love of the Lord Jesus Christ.
She was born September 29, 1947 in Akron, Ohio to Jerry and Martha Winningham. She never married, choosing to devote her life loving God and serving others.
Maryl Lynne was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Akron, Ohio. She graduated from Ellet High School in 1965 and the University of Akron in 1969. She risked her life and freedom as she worked among the persecuted Christians in Eastern European Communist countries in the early 1970's. After returning to the United States, she earned a Ph.D. from Ohio State University, pioneering rehabilitation programs for cancer patients. Her desire to alleviate suffering in others led her to complete a bachelor's and master's degree in nursing at Ohio State (1990, 1991). The last years of her life were devoted to writing, lecturing, art, and the struggle against evil in academics. Her departure leaves a void that cannot be filled.
Maryl Lynne is survived by her comrade-in arms of many years, Barbara A. Preusser. She will be missed by her father, Jerry; three brothers and their families, David, Linda, Patrick, Ryan Winningham, Ann Arbor, MI; Joel, Gail, Rachel, Jason, Adam Winningham, Dallas TX; Paul, Diane, Daniel, Timothy, Hannah, Peter, Sarah Winningham, Uniontown, MO. She was preceded in death by her mother, Martha Winningham.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2001 at 10 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1955 East Stratford Ave, Salt Lake City (2000 East 2650 South) (467-4352), Rev. Fisher officiating. A memorial service will also be held in Akron, Ohio on Saturday, March 3, 2001.
To her, the Heavenly Father says, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter now into the joy of the Lord," and "Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee the crown of life."
