Melvin J. Barrett of Provo passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, February 4, 2001, after several years of health struggles.

He was born Dec. 9, 1925, in Ogden, UT to William Ernest and Vera Holden Barrett. He married Louise Allen on June 28, 1950 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They are the parents of six children. Melvin joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from High School. He served a mission in the Southern States. Always an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Melvin served in many positions including Sunday School Superintendent, Elders Quorum President, Bishop and was a favorite Sunday School teacher to many young people.

After graduating from UCLA, he joined Hughes Aircraft, and from there came to work at Thiokol. He then joined Signetics in Orem, where he later retired.

He is survived by his wife, Louise; one brother, William G. Barrett; six children, Barbara (Byard) Wood, Susan (Merlin) Ethington, Bruce (Heidi) Barrett, Wayne (Tamara) Barrett, Mark Barrett, Janet (Scott) Burningham and 25 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 10th at 2 p.m. in the Grandview 9th Ward Chapel, 1555 North 1350 West, Provo. Friends may call at the Walker Mortuary, 85 East 300 South, Provo on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the Church on Saturday morning from 1 to 1:45 p.m. prior to service. Burial will be in the Provo City Cemetery.
