Allison Anne Gates Dunn, principal of Logan High School, died peacefully at her home of breast cancer on Tuesday, March 27, 2001.
Allison was born on May 5, 1951 in Logan, Utah. She was the daughter of Ora Bills and L. Keith Gates. She attended Logan City schools and graduated from Logan High School in 1969. She attended Utah State University where she was president of Mortar Board and president of the Freshman Women's honorary. She was affiliated with Alpha Chi Omega sorority, was an LDSSA student officer and sang with the Sounds of Zion. She graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Kappa Phi in 1973. She received a Masters degree in library science from USU in 1976. She received her administrator's certificate in 1995.
Allison and Steven E. Dunn were married on May 17, 1973 in the Logan LDS Temple. They made their homes in Brigham City, Orem, Bowling Green, Ohio, and Logan, Utah.
Allison loved music, literature and the theater arts. She was a wonderful advocate for children. She embraced diversity and was an active supporter of Family Fellowship.
Allison started her teaching career at Wahlquist Junior High in Weber district in 1973. After having her children, she became the librarian at Wilson Elementary school from 1986 to 1990. She coached the debate team at Logan High from 1990 to 1995 where her teams won the state championship and multiple other awards. She was the vice principal at Mount Logan Middle School in 1995 and a year later became the vice principal at Logan High School. In 1999 she was appointed principal of Logan High where she served faithfully until her death. Her greatest wish was that school be a safe place for all students to learn and grow.
She is survived by her husband, Steve Dunn, four wonderful children, Margaret, Amanda, Elizabeth Anne, Joseph Leslie, and Daniel Lawrence. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Steven Jonathan. She is survived by her parents, Keith and Ora Gates, a sister, Sheila (Joe) Miller, and a brother, Larry (Jenny) Gates. She is also survived by loving in-laws, Marion and Les Dunn, innumerable friends and students.
Allison's friends are invited to join her family in a celebration of her life on Saturday, March 31, 2001 at 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Logan High School. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Allison Dunn Scholarship Fund in care of the Logan City School Foundation, 101 West Center, Center, Utah 84321.
