- Rulon Soren Nielsen was born in South Jordan, Utah September 5, 1917 to Hans and Pauline Page Nielsen. He was the sixth of eleven children. He farmed all his life while growing up. He graduated from Jordan High School and then started trucking with his brothers. Rulon married his sweetheart Luana Shields May 12, 1937. They lived in Salt Lake and Midvale and then settled in South Jordan where they raised their two children, Gary and Susan. He was the proud grandpa of 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild to arrive shortly.

When World War II started, Rulon went into the Navy; he was an airplane mechanic. He was stationed in California, Oklahoma, and Florida. While he was in the Navy, he won first place riding a bull (of which he was always very proud).

Rulon was involved in many community and service activities. He served on the South Jordan Town Council, was president of South Jordan Lions Club, president and member of Toastmasters. He served many, many years on the Days of '47 Committees, Days of '47 Rodeo, Days of '47 Parade, and the All Horse Parade of which he was the founder. Rulon also served as chairman for the Days of '47 Parade. Rulon announced and lined up many parades throughout his life. He served on the Utah Diabetes Round-Up Pro Rodeo Committee for 13 years. Rulon was director of the Utah Civil Defense and Transportation Club. He was a key leader in the Centennial and Re-enactment of the Pony Express Run.

Rulon has always enjoyed and ridden horses all of his life. He was a member of the Ute Rangers for many years. They drilled all over the country in parade and rodeo competitions. Throughout the years, Rulon accomplished many great things in which he was excited and proud to participate. His family and friends will truly miss this great man.

Survived by his son, Gary and Linda Nielsen, Detroit, MI; daughter, Susan and Newlyn Green, S. Jordan, UT; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchil-dren; brothers, Phil, Ralph, Paul, Galen; and sisters, Iris, Vesta. Preceded in death by his wife, Luana; one brother; and two sisters.

The family wishes to give special thanks to a family friend, Margie Thomas.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wed, Broomhead Funeral Home, 12600 S. 2200 W, Riverton, where friends may call Tues. 6-8 p.m. and Wed. one hour prior to services. Interment, South Jordan Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, make contributions to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 307 W. 200 S, SLC, UT 84101.
