Shauna Bateman Horne died May 1, 2001 at the University Hospital in Salt Lake City, surrounded by the love of friends and family.
"For thy sweet love remembered, such wealth bring..." (Shakespeare). We use the word "sweet" too much. But not for Shauna, who is the epitome of grace and purity and of kindness and love. Her beauty is admired by all graced to have met her. She is a genius at expressing her emotions and making others feel comfortable and loved. Shauna's life is a triumph of graciousness, a monument to human life as it should be.
Born in Madison, Wisconsin on December 10, 1948, to Dr. James LaVar and Helen Ream Bateman, Shauna was raised and attended B.Y. High and Provo High. She lived in Guam and the Virgin Islands with her family before attending BYU, where she met Richard G. Horne. They were wed in the Salt Lake City Temple, August 14, 1970. Shauna and Rick have lived in the Avenues since 1975, where they have raised their family. She has been a model wife, mother, grandmother, neighbor and civic and church leader. She was the president of the Relief Society of the 27th Ward. She loves and is loved by the women of that ward for her kindness, graciousness and leadership. She has served in many other teaching and leadership roles in her ward, stake and the community.
She is a survivor of breast cancer and was deeply involved in the community in promoting awareness and improving treatment. She was a confidant who could help others with similar diagnosis meet the challenges they faced with confidence and courage. She helped many battle this insidious disease through education and empathy. She reached out to all who needed help. She is a friend to all and no one is insignificant to her. She has fought the debilitating disease of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. In the past year she has battled lymphoma, which ultimately took her life.
She loved the creative process. She was a photo stylist for many capable photographers and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint's magazines.
Shauna leaves her husband, Richard G. Horne; her daughters: Andrea (James S.) Boyden (granddaughter Madison Nicole) and Stephanie; two sons: Richard P. and Michael A.; her parents: Dr. J.
