Phyllis Ethel Hawkes Shorten, passed away Monday, May 28, 2001 in Ogden.
She was born February 26, 1905 in Ogden, the daughter of Ethel Elizabeth Jackson and Nathan
Andrew Hawkes.
In 1924, Phyllis married John Leroy Shorten in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died in March of 1981.
Phyllis was educated in Ogden where she attended Weber Academy (presently Weber State University), and LDS Business College.
She was very active in the LDS Church serving in Ward and Stake Primary organizations and was a member of the Primary General Board for 15 years. Later she served in the Relief Society, as president and teacher. For five years she was a dedicated temple worker.
Phyllis worked in the accounting department of Scowcroft Wholesale Grocery and Dry Goods and modeled newspaper ads for that firm.
Mrs. Shorten also participated extensively in community activities. She was a member and officer of various clubs and service organizations, including The Daughters of Utah Pioneers (Camp Waterfall), Child Culture Club, Entre Nous and Cul de Vel. In the cultural area she participated in pageants with her husband. During and after World War II, she served as a volunteer hospital worker, showing her love and compassion for all with whom she associated.
She was a talented seamstress and knitter and made each grandchild an afghan, and a baby shawl for her great-grandchildren. She served without fanfare as a mainstay to her extended family in which she took great pride. We treasure her family records and pictures including stories of her pioneer ancestors.
Surviving are two sons, Richard Hawkes (Joanne), and John Philip (Sharon); eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great great-granddaughter.
Her husband, two sisters and one brother preceded her in death.
