More than 1,600 people came out in the soggy, rainy weather Saturday, April 21, across the state to support thousands of Utahns affected by multiple sclerosis. Volunteers dedicated hundreds of hours, some at 5 a.m. in the rain, to help make the 12th annual MS Walk a success. Walkers raised funds, and community business rallied behind the cause.
On behalf of the National MS Society and Utahns living with the unpredictable, chronic disease, I would like to say thank you. Volunteers, walkers, sponsors and donors: Thank you for your dedication and enthusiasm and support in the fight to end the devastating effects of MS.
Despite the weather, the MS Walk raised more than $151,100 the day of the event. That's an all-time high for day-of event totals, and more donations keep coming in. It's amazing to see the community rally together for a cause that is spreading like a wildfire in this state. Chances are, you know someone with MS. Awareness of multiple sclerosis is increasing in Utah, and it should! Utah has a fairly high prevalence rate of MS — one that could easily rival the highest in North America.
I'm proud to tell you that you are truly helping end the devastating effects of MS. The money will be used for research into the cause and cure of the disease and provide programs right here in Utah. Thank you!
