CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) — A strike by union machinists at the Kennedy Space Center, home of the space shuttle fleet, was averted Saturday when union members approved an 11th-hour contract proposal.
Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers are employees of United Space Alliance, a consortium of private-sector contractors who maintain, process and launch the four space shuttles.
"We're very pleased with the agreement," said company spokeswoman Kari Fluegel. She called the contract an "equitable settlement" but did not divulge its details.

The company said other space center workers would have filled in for the striking machinists, who make up about 10 percent of the Kennedy Space Center work force.
