BOSTON (AP) — Matthew Maxwell Kennedy, a son of Robert F. Kennedy, said Monday he has decided not to run for a congressional seat vacated by the death of Rep. Joseph Moakley.

Kennedy, 36, issued a statement saying he wanted to spend time with his young family.

"Looking into my children's eyes, I just thought, 'I don't want to make a commitment to be away from them,' " said Kennedy, 36, who has a son and two daughters with his wife, Vicki.

It was a sudden decision, Kennedy spokesman Scott Ferson said.

"He sat down with his family over the weekend and decided the personal sacrifice at this time, this was not the appropriate time to do this," Ferson said.
