Let the games begin! The Salt Lake County Libraries kick off their annual summer reading program, "Read for the Gold: Utah Welcomes the World," Thursday, June 14, at 6 p.m. at Wheeler Historic Farm, 6351 S. 900 East.

Guest speakers will be Salt Lake County Mayor Nancy Workman and four-time Olympian Henry Marsh, who set an American record for the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 1985. Events of the evening include a parade, games and prize drawings. This is an outdoor event so participants are encouraged to bring a blanket and the entire family.

For information about this year's reading program, Read for the Gold, visit any county library and look for the official Olympic mascots of the 2002 Winter Games.

With the permission of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, the mascots reading books can be seen in all 17 libraries to encourage children ages 2 to 18 to "Read for the Gold" between June 11 and Aug. 18. Children can read five hours for the bronze level, 10 hours for the silver level and 15 hours for the gold level. Small prizes will be awarded for each reading level.
