San Antonio will be the site of Texas' fourth temple, President Gordon B. Hinckley told the nearly 5,000 people attending a special meeting for members in that city Sunday, June 24. Besides those attending the meeting, others heard the announcement via satellite broadcast in selected area meetinghouses
The location and construction timetable for the temple in south-central Texas have not yet been determined. Temples in Texas are already operating in Dallas and Houston with another under construction in Lubbock. The San Antonio temple is the 125th announced or in operation; it is in addition to 19 others announced or under construction and 106 operating temples around the world.
"The announcement of this new temple reflects the growing membership and faith of Church members in Texas," said Laurence M. Neuberger, president of the San Antonio Texas East Stake.
Church members first arrived in Texas in 1843, and since then Church membership has grown to almost 211,000 members in the state.
