A 4-year-old boy is recovering at Primary Children's Medical Center after he fell about 30 feet at the LDS Conference Center Monday.
The boy suffered head injuries and was in very serious condition, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Jack Rickards. He was unconscious when emergency medical crews arrived but later regained consciousness, Rickards said.
"At this point we don't know; it's under investigation," Salt Lake Police Sgt. Fred Louis said.
The boy fell about 5:30 p.m. from the third level of the Conference Center near the south waterfall. An aunt apparently told police she observed him climb a 3-foot railing, flip himself over to the building's exterior and hit a concrete ledge. From there he apparently fell one story, which police estimate is about 30 feet, and landed on a granite slab, Rickards said.
The boy was apparently visiting the Conference Center with at least one grandparent, at least one aunt and nine children — including cousins, two bothers and one sister. His parents were apparently not on scene, Rickards said.
Rickards said there were no reports of rough play between the boy and the other children. The adults apparently didn't notice the boy climbing the railing until it was too late.
