The HK-1 Spruce Goose, the largest aircraft ever produced, was unveiled Wednesday at the grand opening of the Michael King Smith Evergreen Aviation Educational Institute in McMinnville, Ore. The Spruce Goose was built by eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes and shipbuilder Henry Kaiser in the mid-1940s to fly troops across the Atlantic Ocean. The plane flew only once — for one minute at an altitude of 70 feet — and piloted by Hughes.
