A small pick-up truck and a minivan collided on U.S. 89 near Paria, burning three people to death and leaving two others in critical condition.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Doug McCleve said police in Kane County were having trouble identifying the victims because of the extent of their injuries.
Both vehicles "burned to the ground" in the head-on collision, making it difficult for officers to immediately determine which vehicle the victims were in, McCleve said.
Officers were still investigating the cause of the accident and identifying the victims.
The two survivors, who were taken to a hospital in Flagstaff, were pulled outside of the vehicles by passersby, which spared them the fatal burns suffered by the three who remained trapped inside.
