EPHRAIM, UT-<! > Garth P. Monson age, 73, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away Wed., August 15, 2001, of heart failure. He left this world surrounded by his loving wife and children.
Garth was born January 27, 1928, in Preston, Idaho, to Alma Hyrum and Margaret Ena Peterson Monson. He was the 9th of ten children. He served an LDS Mission in Texas. He graduated from Utah State University and received his Masters in education from BYU. He married his eternal sweetheart on June 3, 1952, in the Logan LDS Temple. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was Chaplain in the Utah/Arizona National Guard for many years. Garth was an avid scouter having received the Silver Beaver Award and served on the state board for Woodbadge.
He taught in the LDS Church Educational System in Seminary/Institute for 36 years, impacting countless lives and shepherding many. He ended his career as an institute director at the University of Hawaii after 25 years at Snow College. He dedicated his life to service in the LDS Church. Garth served as Manti Temple president from 1991 to 1994. He served in other numerous callings including: bishop, counselor in a stake presiden-cy, and was currently serving as High Priest Group leader. He and his wife served a mission in Hannibal Missouri.
He enjoyed, nature, camping with his family, ice skating, traveling with his wife and attending grandchildren's activities.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Ephraim; nine children, Dennis (Melonie) Monson, Orem; Bruce (Marilyn) Monson, Hyde Park; Darlynn (Terry) Menlove, Spanish Fork; Jerry Monson, Salt Lake; Paul (Leslie) Monson, Cedar Hills; Richard (Mary Ann) Monson, West Jordan; David Monson, Sandy; Shauna (Gerald) Wayman, Ephraim; Annette Monson, Pleasant Grove; five sisters, Deane Edwards; Mada Larsen; Connie Rawlings, all of Preston, ID; Barbara Rinderknect, Providence; Cleone Jones, Rexburg, ID; brother, Dale Monson, St. George; 33 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday, August 20, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. in the Ephraim 3rd Ward LDS Chapel (400 East Center). Friends may call at the Ward Chapel in Ephraim on Sunday from 6-8 p.m. and again at the Church on Monday from 9-10 a.m. Graveside services will be with Military Rites by the Leonard C. Brostman Post #10323 in the Preston Cemetery in Preston, Idaho at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Funeral directors, Ursenbach Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, UT.
