My son and I went through our annual back-to-school ritual of taking out every item of clothing he owns to sort, save, give away to his younger cousin or toss in the rag bag. Another growth spurt shot my son several inches up on the height chart, which means lots of stuff to pass along.

As I packed up the box of outgrown clothes he had hardly worn, I thought about those high-speed nature films where a flower instantly explodes into a blossom like fireworks.

Those images remind me of my three kids and how they're like those little blades of grass you see rapidly shooting out of the soil. Then I picture them growing out of their clothes, and in a few more autumns they're no longer small.

Do we sit back and watch life race by in high speed this fall, or do we water it, nurture it and live it one frame at a time?
