A Murray City Power gas turbine, the third added to the city's power plant, is pushed into place by workman Wednesday. Their task is made easier by air skids that allow the massive turbine to float above the floor. The 14-megawatt unit was pulled off the delivery truck by crane, right, and placed on the air skids for the move inside the building. The new unit was the third added to the city's power plant this summer, with a total generating capacity of 42 megawatts. A megawatt is enough electricity to serve about 500 typical homes. When all are operational, the units are expected to meet about one-third of the city's summer-peak demand and allow it to avoid buying high-priced power on the open market. It also will give the city the option of selling excess electricity in the wholesale market.
