EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — The owner of a Long Island restaurant known for its celebrity clientele has died after his car crashed into a tree.

Jeffrey "Nick" Salaway, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene of the one-vehicle crash around 3:30 a.m. Friday, said East Hampton Police Chief Todd Sarris.

Salaway was not wearing a seat belt, and there were no indications of drug or alcohol use, Sarris said. Police said it appeared Salaway might have fallen asleep at the wheel as he headed home from a nightclub, because his 1998 Volvo sedan did not leave skid marks.
