Henry J. Webb, age 86, died Sept 20, 2001 at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He was born March 12, 1915 in Indianapolis, IN to Albert Jr. and Edith Vehling Rose. At the age of two, upon the death of his mother, he was adopted by an uncle and aunt Henry J. and Wilhelmina Veh-ling Webb. He married Joyce Kathryn Trost, in Salt Lake City, Sept 6, 1947. He grew up in Crawfordsville, IN, Doylestown PA, and New York City.

He obtained his BS from New York University and his MA and PhD from the Uni-versity of Iowa. He was a World War II veteran with three battle stars for service in Northern France, the Ardennes, and the Rhineland, receiving the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. He rose to the rank of Master Sergeant.

He first joined the English Department of the University of Utah in 1940, and again after the war in 1946, teaching several different classes of English Literature, but being especially remembered for his classes in the Middle Ages, Chaucer, and Shakespeare. He wrote many articles dealing with the Middle Ages and the Elizabethan period and is the author of the book Elizabethan Military Science: The Books and the Practice, University of Wisconsin Press, 1965. His work in progress, at the time of his death, was a study of Elizabethan Culture. He also wrote extensively of the desert which he knew and loved, having spent over thirty years exploring its most remote corners by jeep and by horse. He was one of those lucky few who was intimately acquainted with the enchanted side-canyons of the Colorado River from Hite to Warm Creek.

He was dear, and beloved by his family, colleagues, students and friends and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife, Joyce K. Webb; children, Elaine (Michael) Pines, Margaret (William) Swensen, Melissa Helwig, Rosemary Taylor (William Zucker); grandchildren, Erica Pines, Heather Pines, Matthew (Lynelle) Swensen, Deidre Helwig, Ste-phanie Helwig, Hilary Taylor; and great-grandchildren; Danielle Swensen, Bryan Swensen, Jeremy Swensen.

Graveside services Tues. Sept 25, 2001, 12 noon Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Dr. Directors, Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the graduate student funds in the name of Henry J. Webb, University of Utah.
