Richard Lavell Smuin, age 75, passed away Sept. 25, 2001, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Dick was born to Lavell and Helen Morton Smuin on Nov. 14, 1925, in Lehi, Utah. They later moved to Magna, Utah, where he grew up. He graduated from Cyprus High and moved on to the University of Utah where he played on the 1944 NCAA Champion Basketball Team. He then entered the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater until 1946. He returned to the U of U and was one of three Utes to play for both the 1944 NCAA and 1947 NIT Champion basketball teams. Dick married Joan Hardy on Sept. 19, 1950, and they raised their family in Salt Lake City. During this time he coached and taught at Granger High, 1958-64; Cyprus High, 1964-76, where he was head basketball coach; and Cottonwood High, 1977-1984, where he finished his teaching career. Coach Smuin leaves behind a lasting legacy of service.
His beloved wife Joan preceded him in death on Feb. 27, 2001.
He is survived by his sons James (Debra) and John (Julie) and five cherished grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Valley View 11th Ward, 4032 South 2300 East. Friends may call Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the services. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
