Daniel Reed Laker, 85, died January 13, 2002, at his home following an extended illness.

He was born in St. Charles, Idaho, on May 21, 1916, to Daniel Cornelius and Dora Hemmert Laker, the eldest of five children. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1937 with a degree in Physics and Electrical Engineering and took a position with the Western Electric Company. He also served in the National Guard.

On June 16, 1939 he married Dora Bernice Richardson in the Salt Lake Temple. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many varied positions in the wards and stakes where he resided.

He was active in several community services, particularly after he retired in 1976: Primary Children's Hospital, Utah Center for the Blind, and as a public speaker for Toastmaster's International. He enjoyed many hobbies: amateur radio, photography, flying, music, shop work, and carpentry.

A pervading principle in his life was to learn and teach others the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. By worldly standards he has left a monetary estate of no great substance, but by eternal standards his legacy is a strong and faithful posterity.

Survived by his wife and children: Dora Ann (Lynn) Smith, Rexburg, ID; Brent Richardson (Janelle) Laker, Genola, UT; Mary-Jane (Carl) Biehn, Bountiful, UT; Sally (Wayne) Jacobsen, Sandy, UT; Kate Suzanne (Karl) Buchanan, Heber, UT; Paul Richardson (Pamela) Laker, Murrietta, CA; 30 grandchildren and 26 great-grand children; one brother, Bryan Laker, and one sister, Anna Williams, and his beloved dog Mattie.

Preceded in death by his brother Blaine and his sister LaRee Cummings and two grandsons.

Funeral Services will be held Wed., Jan. 16, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Valley View 7th Ward Chapel, 2245 E. 3900 S. Friends may call Tues. from 6-8 p.m. at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Dr., or 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the Rosemont Section of Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
