The American Furniture Manufacturers Association offers these tips on shopping for safe furniture.

General: Furniture surfaces should be smooth and free of splinters.

Bunk beds: Not recommended for children under 6. Make sure the top bunk has guardrails and that the ladder is sturdy and secure.

Upholstery: Check for a gold UFAC tag that ensures that the fabric is flame-retardant.

—Bookcases: Be careful not to overload shelves. Secure the top of the unit to the wall to prevent tipping over.

Toy chest: Be sure lids have safety latches to keep protect tiny fingers.
