Michael T. Miller, 62, former chairman and CEO of Alpha Beta Co. and also a past president and CEO of the Skaggs Foundation, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002 at his Salt Lake home after a two-year battle with cancer.

He served as president and CEO of the Skaggs Foundation from 1991 to 2000 and was on the board of directors for American Stores, the Scripps Foundation and the Utah Alcoholism Foundation.

Mr. Miller joined Skaggs in 1977 and held many positions, including vice president of advertising, president of Skaggs Telecommunications, secretary to the board of directors and senior vice president of Alpha Beta Stores.

In 1989, he became president of the Jewel Osco food and drug chain. He was chairman of the Utah Sate Democratic Party from 1979-80 and was a press secretary and executive assistant to former Utah Gov. Calvin L. Rampton.

Mr. Miller served as executive director of the state Department of Economic Development for Utah and as a public relations officer for the Four Corners Regional Commission.

Early in his career, Mr. Miller worked as a photographer, reporter, assignment and news editor for KUTV, Ch. 2.

Mr. Miller was born in Salt Lake City. He served for four years in the U.S. Air Force.

In the years following his business retirement, he was a volunteer and philanthropist. He helped create the Skaggs Catholic Center and was honored by the Catholic Diocese of Utah with a St. Michael's award.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 South. There will be no public viewing. Burial at Larkin Sunset Lawn.<
