FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — After visiting her daughter in jail for the first time, Gov. Jeb Bush's wife said Wednesday that her daughter's battle with drugs has prompted her to begin speaking out.
Columba Bush, who spoke to hundreds of middle school students at an anti-drug event, said parents shouldn't take their children's welfare for granted.
"Never be overconfident," Bush said. "That was my big mistake."
Bush said after the event that she has campaigned for drug prevention for the past eight years.
When asked what sparked her involvement, she replied, "my daughter."
Noelle Bush, 25, is serving a 10-day sentence she received after being accused of carrying a piece of crack cocaine in her shoe while at a drug rehabilitation center. The Bushes saw Noelle for the first time since her sentencing during a brief visit Tuesday at Orange County Jail, said jail spokesman Allen Moore.
