Hank and Lizzy Jones owned a ranch between Wellington and Price. As Butch and Sundance rode through Nine-mile Canyon on their way to Robber's Roost, they frequently stopped by. After Hank passed away, they made a point of stopping by to help Lizzy with work around the place.
One morning they rode in, put their horses in the corral and went to meet Lizzy on the porch.
"Boys," she told them, "this may be the last time you can stop by the ranch."
"What's the matter?" they replied. "Have you sold the ranch? Are we eating you out of house and home?"
Lizzy told them that since Hank's death, she had had a hard time keeping up with payments on the ranch, and a banker was coming that afternoon to foreclose.
"How much do you owe?" asked Butch.
"With interest and all, about $400," said Lizzy.
The boys sat down to eat and helped Lizzy with a few chores. But as they were getting ready to leave, Butch brought in one of their saddle bags, and counted out $400 in cash. "Be sure to get a receipt, saying you're paid in full," they told Lizzy, before getting on their horses and riding away.
A week later this story appeared in the local newspaper:
"About two miles from the ranch, two masked bandits robbed a local banker of $400 and a gold watch, and rode off towards Nine-mile Canyon. The sheriff's office has some leads but no positive identification as to who the robbers might be. Some have speculated that they are probably members of the Wild Bunch."
