NEW YORK — Gramophone magazine chose violinist Maxim Vengerov as artist of the year and gave the award for record of the year to pianist Stephen Hough.
Hough won for a recording of Saint-Saens' concertos with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli won the recital award for "Dreams & Fables — Gluck Italian Arias."
The annual awards, selected by the magazine's critics, are considered among the most prestigious in classical music.
Sir Colin Davis' recording of Berlioz's "Les Troyens" with the London Symphony Orchestra won in opera, Sir Simon Rattle's recording of Schoenberg's "Gurrelieder" with the Berlin Philharmonic won in choral, and mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter won for vocal for "Chaminade."
John Adams' "El Nino," conducted by Kent Nagano in a Peter Sellars production, won best DVD.
