Calvin Williams Funk, 76, passed away Nov. 16, 2002 in the Logan Regional Hospital from heart disease, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, six children, 13 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
He was born Sept 30, 1926 in Rexburg, ID to Grace and LeRoy Funk. He married Carol Noble Feb 18, 1955 in the Logan LDS Temple. They are the parents of six children, Marianne Funk (Washington, D.C.), Jordan (Delane) Funk (Alturas, CA), Mrs. Crad (Francine) Kennedy (Boston), Alan K. Funk (Richmond, UT), Steven C. Funk (Grand Junction, CO) and Matthew C. (Janet) Funk (Richmond, UT).
Calvin moved to Cache Valley with his family when he was six years old and spent the remainder of his life here. He operated a dairy farm southeast of Richmond for 50 years, raising a family and serving in his church, the farming profession, his community, and state. Calvin served in both World War II and the Korean War. He served in the Navy, 1944-1946, and as a first lieutenant in the Army, 1951-1953.
Education was a priority to Calvin. He obtained a bachelor's degree in Animal Science from Utah State University in 1950, following it up with six months of study abroad in Finland as part of an international farm youth exchange. He supported Carol in her pursuit of her master's degree and was committed to the education of his children and grandchildren. All six of their children have college degrees. Five either hold graduate or post-graduate degrees or are pursuing them.
Calvin was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and Carol filled a temple mission to Washington, D.C., 1997. He has served the church in various callings his entire life, including serving on the high council, in a bishopric, as bishop, and as a counselor in the stake presidency.
He served his community in various capacities, including serving on the Bear River Commission, the Soil Conservation Service, the Utah Dairy Commission, the Cache County Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Utah State Committee for Consumer Affairs.
Service was the hallmark of Calvin's life. Besides serving his church, family and community in formal capacities, he consistently served others through day-to-day acts of kindness and compassion. Through the years, he regularly plowed the snow from neighbors' driveways, used his farm equipment to assist neighbors and other farmers, provided a home to a loved grandson, and frequently visited the widowed, the ill, and the lonely. He unstintingly served his family. Through kindness and character, he has loomed large in an extended clan of children, grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews. His example will be remembered and his companionship deeply missed.
Services will be Wed. Nov 20, 2002, 12 noon City Creek Ward Chapel, 150 S. 1st E, Richmond, with Brother Michael Hall conducting. Friends may call Tues. 6-8 p.m. at the church in Richmond and Wed. 10:30-11:30 a.m. also at the church. Interment, Richmond Cemetery. Directors, Webb Funeral Home, Preston, ID.
