Helen Brandley Wiscomb passed away at home Monday, December 23, 2002. She was recuperating from recent multiple bypass surgery.
Helen was born in Salt Lake City March 8, 1924, the daughter of Harold and Elsie Talmage Brandley, the granddaughter of James E. and May Booth Talmage. Following a two year courtship commenced while attending East High School in Salt Lake City, she married Wayne Wiscomb June 12, 1942.
Helen is survived by her husband, six children: Randy (Mr. Leonard Richmond), Chrisanne (Mrs. Thomas Olsen), Allison (Mrs. Keith VanVranken), Bret, husband of Jeri Foulger, Jennifer (Mrs. L.J. Smith) and Amy (Mrs. Darrell MothIverson) Wayne Brandley Wiscomb preceded her in death; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren have lost the presence of incredible love they reciprocated.
Helen was a gifted artist, expressing her love of art through extraordinary creations of paintings, sculptures, ceramics and pottery. Through years and years of teaching which continued to her passing, she shared this love with students, young and old, many of who subsequently pursued successful careers in art. She was honored to have had one woman exhibits at the Springville Museum of Art, the Pioneer Memorial Theater and O.C. Tanner. Springville Art Museum has included her work, The Young Thinker, in their permanent collection.
Helen served on the Editorial Board of Children's Friend and three curriculum committees for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, writing lessons for MIA Maids, Aaronic Priesthood and the Relief Society. During 1998-99, she was a Church Service Missionary at the Church Family Research Center.
For approximately 8 years, Helen authored a column, Just In Passing, for the Salt Lake Tribune, a column through which she shared her own mothering experiences with an empathetic audience. These comprise a great store of memorabilia.
Preceding interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, a funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 27th at 11:00 a.m. at the South Cottonwood 13th Ward Chapel, 5235 Wesley Road (11th East and 5235 South), Salt Lake City. Friends may visit family members Thursday, December 26th at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive from 6-8:00 p.m. and from 9:45-10:45 before the funeral service on the 27th at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
