FALMOUTH, Maine<! > - Laura S. Fairbourn, 94, died Dec. 1, 2002 at Fore side Harbor Assisted Living Center.
Mrs. Fairbourn was born August 28, 1908, Bellefontaine, Ohio, a daughter of Bion H. and Clara A. Smith. She attended and graduated from Logan County schools and attended business college.
She married William Taro Fairbourn of Sandy, Utah. She was a bookkeeper and a homemaker. Laura volunteered for the Red Cross, the Navy Relief Society, Marine Officers Wives Association, Holladay United Church of Christ, and the Mount Olympus Garden Club. During Laura's 49-year marriage to Major General William Taro Fairbourn, USMC, she lived around the country in southern California, Virginia, Rhode Island and New York, as well as near Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941.
Laura and Bill retired to Salt Lake City in 1970. She came to Maine in 1997 to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law.
Mrs. Fairbourn is preceded in death by her husband. Surviving are her son, W. Thomas Fairbourn and daughter-in-law, Dona A. Durham of Scarborough, Maine; one grandchild, Paul Lagoe of Arlington, VA; and many nieces and nephews.
Throughout her 94 years, Laura befriended, inspired and touched the lives of so very many people with her profound graciousness, giving and loving nature, and her great strength of character. She was also a long-term cancer survivor.
Laura's family greatly appreciate the many kindnesses shown to Laura by the staff members at the Foreside Harbor Assisted Living Center.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 6th, at 10 a.m. at Foreside Harbor, 191 Foreside Road, Falmouth, Maine. A memorial service will also be held at Holladay United Church of Christ in Salt Lake City, at a later date. Arrangements made by Conroy-Tully Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, ME 04101.
