Local police and the FBI are looking at whether a man accused of abducting and killing a 13-year-old girl in Arkansas before committing suicide may have any ties to the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping.

The man has ties to Salt Lake City.

"There's no obvious connection, but we're definitely not blowing it off," said FBI spokesman George Dougherty.

The bodies of David Fuller, 47, and Kacie Rene Woody were found Wednesday night in a storage facility near Little Rock, Ark.

Fuller is from California, but he lived with his parents in Salt Lake City in the 1970s. His father, Edward Fuller, still lives here.

Edward Fuller told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that he didn't believe his son would commit such a crime.

Police say David Fuller behaved methodically in kidnapping and killing Woody, leading them to believe he may have kidnapped other children.

"It's doubtful this was (Fuller's) first time," said Conway, Ark. police Maj. Mark Elsinger. "There weren't a lot of missteps made or sloppiness on his part. There was some planning done here."

Dougherty said the Salt Lake office of the FBI was notified Thursday of the situation. Although he said the matter will be investigated fully, there was nothing Friday that connected Fuller with Smart.

Smart was kidnapped from her Federal Heights home June 5 and has not been seen since. No one has been charged in connection with her disappearance.

Salt Lake City Police Capt. Scott Atkinson also said his investigators were looking into Fuller's Utah connection.

Authorities believe Woody met Fuller in an Internet chat room and that the man likely deceived the girl into believing he was much younger. Telephone records also linked the girl to Fuller, police said.

Police acting on a tip Wednesday evening tracked Fuller's rented van to a west Conway storage unit, where they found Kacie and Fuller dead in an apparent murder-suicide. Fuller's vehicle, with a California license tag, was found at a nearby Motel 6.

Kacie and Fuller each suffered a single gunshot wound to the head, though autopsy results were still pending.

Elsinger said the girl's body had been bound and was in the back of the van where a seat had been removed. He said Fuller's body was in the seat next to the van inside the storage unit.

Elsinger said police suspect the girl was sexually assaulted.

The girl was apparently abducted Tuesday night when her older brother called police after finding the girl gone.

Conway Police Lt. Chip Stokes said investigators believed Woody and Fuller had communicated through Internet chat rooms for about a month.

Police don't think the girl went with the man willingly, though officials did not release further details of how the two wound up together Tuesday.
