Melba Dean Petersen Burton, age 78, passed away February 15, 2002, at her daughter's home in West Valley City, after a brief battle with cancer. Melba loved music, going to the movies, chocolate and most importantly spending time with her family. She was loved by all who were fortunate enough to have met her. Her smile was contagious. All knew her for the lovely, caring person she was.

Born April 1, 1923 in Manti, UT to Henry Edgar Petersen and Myrtle Marie Jensen. Married John Taylor Burton April 4, 1944 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Melba devoted her life to her husband, children and grandchildren. She was active in the East Mill Creek 9th Ward, where she served as president of the YWMIA and coached the ward volleyball team when her daughters were in high school.

Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Janice and Robert Belt, Woodinville, WA, Judith and Drew Dillman, Iowa City, IA, JoLynn and Roger Evans, West Valley City, UT; son, James Petersen Burton; six granddaughters; nine grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and her sister-in-law, Leone Burton. Preceded in death by her husband, Jack; son, John T. Burton, Jr., and sister, Oneita Nelson.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tues. Feb 19, 2002, Wasatch Lawn Mortuary. Friends may call at Wasatch Lawn 3401 S. Highland Dr, Mon. Feb 18, 2002, 5-7 p.m. and Tues. 1-1:45 p.m. prior to services. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park
