Getting there: Poprad Airport is the only international airport in the High Tatras, but only few flights go there. Coming from the capital, Bratislava, there are 13 daily trains going to Poprad-Tatry, the transportation hub when heading to the mountains. The ride takes nearly four hours; the slower trains take an hour longer. The cheapest tickets cost about $7. There are local trains, buses, taxis and minibuses that provide transportation to ski resorts.

Lodging: Hotels in the resort towns are plentiful, costing from $25 for a double room a night to the luxury Hotel Hubert in Gerlachov, where a double room would cost about $75. Locals also rent out rooms, with prices ranging from $2 to $9 per person per night.

What to do: For nature lovers, there are many hiking and biking trails, ski slopes, sledding trail at Hrebienok, a nature museum and spas treating respiratory problems.
