INDIANAPOLIS — A grandson of a congresswoman could face more than 200 years in prison for robbing and torturing two men who prosecutors say were targeted because they were gay.

Jamie C. Carson, 20, was convicted Friday of charges including robbery, criminal deviate conduct and criminal confinement. He is a grandson of Rep. Julia Carson, D-Ind.

Sentencing was set for May 10. "There's no question that this is a hate crime, and we are going to push for that at sentencing," deputy prosecutor Richard Plath said.

Indiana has no hate crime statute, but Plath said the judge could consider that as a factor for sentence enhancement of up to 20 years above the standard prison term for each of the four most serious counts. That would bring a maximum possible sentence up to 240 years.
