Our beloved mother and grandmother, Shirley Jean Karsten, passed away peacefully in Salt Lake City, UT April 3, 2002 after a long illness.
She was born February 2, 1923 in Long Prairie, Minnesota. She is the daughter of the late George and Marjorie Peterson. Shirley served our country as a Wave during World War II in the U.S. Navy. She married Roy Campbell Bowers December 7, 1945. Later divorced. Married Wesley Karsten August 21, 1954. Later divorced.
Shirley was a talented artist and did beautiful work as a seamstress. She had a love for dogs, bowling, painting and enjoyed watching the Jazz. She looked forward to visiting with friends from the church "coffee club." She had a love for life.
She is survived by her children, Roy Bowers Jr. (Elaine), South Lake, TX; Diane, West Jordan; Steven (Tamera), Midvale; grandchildren, Becky Arnett (Greg), Dallas, Texas; Bryan and Andrea Karsten, Midvale; family dog, Penny; brothers and sisters, Myrtle Nelson, Hazel Scheve and Marvin Peterson, Long Prairie, Minn.; Betty Hengemuhle, Minneapolis, Minn.; Gerald Peterson, Irwin, Tennessee; Elwyn Peterson, Walnut Creek, CA. Preceded in death by parents; and her favorite dog, Tina.
A special thank you to Larry Starry and Diane for their committed, dedicated and loving care. Shirley will be missed by all. Diane would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses on Four West at St. Mark's Hospital for their loving support and care.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 8, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the Goff Mortuary 8090 So. State where friends may call Sunday 6-8 p.m. or Monday from 10-11:00 a.m. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 So. Highland Drive.
