FORT BELVOIR, Va. — The Defense Logistics Agency announced Friday that the distribution operations of its Defense Distribution Depot Hill would be contracted out to EG&G Technical Services Inc., headquartered in Manassas, Va.

The tentative decision was made after a study indicated it was more cost effective to convert the operations to the private sector.

In March 1998, DLA announced that most of its distribution depots would undergo public/private competition. The Hill depot is the eighth of 16 sites to complete the process. The remaining depots are subject to competition in phases over a seven-year period scheduled to end in the spring of 2004.

The Hill depot will be in a transition period for six months. Located at Hill Air Force base, it is the site of distribution operations that support the maintenance functions performed by the Ogden Air Logistics Center.

Primary distribution support to the Ogden ALC is provided for the Minuteman and Peacekeeper missiles and the Emergency Rocket Communication System; the F-16 Fighting Falcon; the C-130 Hercules; and Air Force-wide depot level overhaul and repair for all types of landing gear, wheels, brakes and tires. Tent repair is another associated function that the Hill depot performs.
