Jane Pauley says she and Deborah Norville exchanged "clueless" gifts in 1989 when Norville replaced her on NBC's "Today" show.
"I gave her a parting gift, an alarm clock; it was mine, but it was broken," Pauley says in the April 13 issue of TV Guide. "It was meant as an artifact, but the symbolism was unfortunate. Then she gave me a present, a set of knives. We were clueless. And, in the end, both innocent victims."
Norville, who left 19 months later after ratings plummeted and is now the host of "Inside Edition," says she doesn't remember the knives, but she remembers how painful the time was.
