Iris Mary Nicholes Carlquist, age 78, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2002 at home with her family in Salt Lake City, UT.

Iris was born October 24, 1923 in Lehi, UT, to Victor W. and Norma Iris Jones Nicholes. On December 21, 1941, she married Stephen Carlquist. He preceded her in death January 28, 1996.

Together they made their home in San Francisco, CA, Salt Lake City, UT, Gig Harbor, WA, Willard, UT, Lakewood, OH, Cocoa Beach, FL and again in Salt Lake City, UT where they resided the past 32 years.

Iris was a believer in the American political system. She was a judge of elections most of her life, and her home was often the site for Democratic Party mass meetings.

Among the joys of her life were her family, classical music, and her job as librarian at the Salt Lake Tribune.

Iris is survived by her two children, David A. Carlquist (George Frandsen) and Stephanie (Raymond) Nicholson; six grandchildren, Sara, John and Emily Carlquist, Tom, Ellie and Jeff Nicholson; daughter-in-law, Lynne N. Carlquist; brothers and sisters, Fay (Theron) Beck, Thomas V. (LaVon) Nicholes, Donna (Glenn) Thorum and Ronald J. (Patricia) Nicholes. Preceded in death by her parents and children, Steven N. and Iris Jane Carlquist.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 13, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, where friends may call Sunday evening, from 5-7 p.m., and on Monday one hour prior to the services.

Interment: Draper City Cemetery.
