LAIMBEER TO COACH SHOCK: The Detroit Shock hired former Pistons center Bill Laimbeer to replace Greg Williams as coach. Williams was fired earlier in the day after the Shock started the season 0-10, the worst in six-year history of the league.

NAVRATILOVA OUSTED: Martina Navratilova's short-lived return to singles is over. The 45-year-old Navratilova lost 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to third-seeded Daniela Hantuchova — a player 26 years younger — at the Eastbourne grasscourt championships.
On Tuesday, playing her first, tour singles match in eight years, Navratilova beat Tatiana Panova 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, becoming the oldest woman to win a WTA match.
Track & field
5 UTAH ATHLETES HONORED: Five Utah track and field athletes have been named to either the first or second team of the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America Men's Track Team.
University of Utah senior Teren Jameson was named to the first team. He is the second Ute chosen. Utah gymnast Theresa Kulikowski received the honor earlier this month. Weber State's Todd Grunander was also a first-team selection.
BYU trackster John Hedengren was named to the second team, marking his fifth Academic All-American honor as a Cougar. Joining Hedengren on the second team were Southern Utah's Kyle Rowley and Weber's Jeremy Tolman.
Golf
PUBLIC LINKS QUALIFIER: Salt Lake's Tommy Sharp, who plays college golf for Colorado State, earned a berth in the U.S. Public Links golf tournament by winning the local qualifying Tuesday at Glendale Golf Course.
Sharp shot a two-round total of 134 along with University of Utah golfer Pete Stone, then beat Stone with a birdie on the first playoff hole. City Am champ Brandon Hargett finished third at 138, while Daniel Horner and Jake Peterson tied for fourth at 139.
WATTS EARNS SENIOR INVITE: Steve Watts fired a 2-under-par 70 to earn a spot in the United States Senior Open Championship later this month in Baltimore, Md.
Watts, a member at Riverside Country Club, edged Steve Brinton of the Salt Lake Country Club, by one stroke in the USGA Senior Open qualifying event at Oakridge Country Club. Thirty seniors (50 and over) vied for the one qualifying spot.
Ron Garland, Don Needham and Roy Christensen tied for third after each shot 73s.
UVSC PLAYERS MOVE ON: UVSC golfers Clark Rustand and Carl Jensen will be headed to in-state Mountain West schools. Jensen has signed a letter of intent to go to Utah, and Rustand has verbally committed to play for BYU. Jensen prepped at Skyline High in Salt Lake City. Rustand, who earned NJCAA All-America status at UVSC, is from Sabino High in Tucson, Ariz.
