The national Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity has officially recognized a unit on the University of Utah campus, ending an absence of more than 50 years. The Epsilon Tau colony was re-established in early March 2001 and the national fraternity welcomed the U. unit into full membership in mid-May this year.
Over the past 14 months, the fraternity raised nearly $1,500 for the Huntsman Cancer Institute and donated more than 1,750 hours of community service to projects for the needy, Tree Utah and the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center. A chapter that existed at the U. before the 1950s dwindled during the Korean War and eventually disbanded. The fraternity was established after the Civil War as a means of uniting the fractured North and South. It now has 145 chapters nationwide and 180,000 members.
