Provo

The state may cut its $2 million contribution to help move the Kuhni animal rendering plant out of Provo.

The Legislature is trying to find a way to offset a $173 million budget shortfall. Senate Majority whip John Valentine, R-Orem, said the money for Kuhni may be trimmed but did not say by how much.

Provo city officials said they have not been notified of any pending cuts. Moving the Kuhni plant, which recycles animal carcasses and sometimes emits foul odors, will cost $6 million, an expense the city and area businesses will share.

The Provo City Council recently approved relocating the plant to a rural location in Juab County. The Juab County Commission must approve the move before it can happen.

Utah County

The ramps at 1200 West and at Main in Lehi will be closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. starting Saturday and running through July 10 while crews conduct paving work. The ramps to Main in American Fork will also be closed during the same times.

Crews will be rotomilling and paving each ramp. Motorists will be detoured to adjacent interchanges to access Lehi, American Fork and surrounding areas.

Starting this year, prospective high school and junior high school teachers can earn emphases in math, history, chemistry, physics and business.

The new education school split from UVSC's School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences to "supervise more efficiently and effectively the unique programs found within education," according to UVSC officials.

UVSC's education program started in 1996 with 30 students.

This year, UVSC counts 174 elementary education majors, 28 early childhood education students and 66 secondary education majors. "I'm excited because I think there's nothing more important than preparing quality teachers to work with students in this area," said Briant Farnsforth, dean of the new school.
