CALGARY — The Salt Lake Stingers not only won a game Tuesday night, but they may have also found Bart Miadich. The Stingers edged Calgary 3-2 for their fifth straight win, and Miadich, who had struggled with his control over the last month, retired all five batters he faced for his first save since June 6.
Miadich, who had walked nineteen in his last 10 2/3 innings, entered the game in the eighth inning with Cannons on second and third with only one out. He got Mark Smith to pop up, and he fanned Andy Abad to get out of the jam. Miadich then set Calgary down 1-2-3 in the ninth for his 13th save. Elvin Nina (4-7) recorded the win, allowing just two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks in 6 2/3 innings.
Alfredo Amezaga had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Salt Lake offense. His RBI infield single in the third off Cannons starter Ryan Glynn (1-1) gave the Stingers a 1-0 lead, and he broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh with a run scoring double.
BEE LINES: Jeff Guiel had two hits to raise his total to nine for the first three games of the series. Shawn Wooten is back with the Stingers on a rehab assignment. He joined the team in late May to come back from a thumb injury and strained a rib cage muscle during a swing at a pitch. The final game of the series Wednesday night (7:05 on AM1230) will be Salt Lake's final game in Calgary. The Cannons will be relocating to Albuquerque next season. The team, the former Salt Lake Gulls, moved to Alberta for the 1985 season.
