ALTON/KANAB, UTAH - <! > Sherman Keith Stewart, age 74, died Sunday September 15, 2002 in St. George, Utah.

Born October 9, 1927 in Portland, Oregon to Harriet Bunting and George Stewart. He married Phyllis Johnson on March 17, 1950 in Kanab, Utah.

Sherman grew up in Ogden, Utah and graduated from Ogden High School October 9, 1945. He went on to attend Weber College where he was a championship swimmer. He joined the Navy in 1945 serving for two years. After his release from the service he moved to Kanab and helped his father run the Bunting Market.

Sherman played the accordion from age eight. He also played in bands in Ogden and a band Kanab known as "The Mountain Dew Trio". He was a meat cutter, bartender at the "Buckskin Tavern", milkman for Highland Dairy, retired millwright and electrician for Kaibab Industries, electrical repairman, and operated the first coin operated laundromat in Kanab. He was a member of Jaycees and the American Legion. Sherman was a charter member of the Kanab Volunteer Fire Department, and the first president of K. C. Amateur Radio Club. He spent many happy hours talking on the radio. He was an avid sportsman and loved four-wheeling. In 1984 he purchased the Alton Log Cabin and spent the next 18 years painting and remodeling it.

Survivors include wife, Phyllis of Kanab, Utah; children, Georgia

(Frederick) Hobusch of Sandy, Utah; Joelyn (Jerry) Mash of Salt Lake City, Utah; Keith Stewart of Fredonia, Arizona; and Rick (Laurie) Stewart of Kanab; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 19, 2002 at 11:00 p.m. in the Kanab Utah Stake Center. Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday night at Mosdell Mortuary and from 9:45- 10:45 a.m. at the church the day of the service. Burial will be in the Kanab Cemetery under the direction of Mosdell Mortuary.
