Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) plans to open a new store in Sandy in the spring of 2003.
The 21,500-square-foot store will be located in the South Towne Center, 10450 S. State, the company stated. It will employ about 60 workers.
The Sandy location will be REI's second along the Wasatch Front. The company operates a store on 3300 South in Salt Lake County.
The company also opened a store in Orem in 1995, but it closed three years later.
"We expect the Sandy location to do two things," said REI spokeswoman Lora Flewelling. "It will serve the folks who shopped with us in Orem, and it will serve the folks for whom it might not be convenient to shop at the REI location on 3300 South."
The Sandy store will carry a full selection of outdoor gear, including clothing and equipment for hiking, camping, climbing, cycling and travel.
REI operates 61 retail stores in 24 states.
