These are the people who were killed in homicides in 2002:
1. ST. GEORGE, Jan. 3 — Ted Richard Banister, 37, Hurricane, was shot six times at Southgate Golf Course where he was a groundskeeper. Prosecutors believe the motive was robbery. Six people were arrested in connection with the crime, three were charged with murder. Juan Antonio Olvera, 19, was charged with aggravated murder, a capital felony, aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, and witness tampering, a third-degree felony. In an agreement with prosecutors, Olvera pleaded guilty to first-degree felony murder and first-degree felony aggravated robbery. Arthur Audette, 18, pleaded guilty in November to a reduced charge of one count of murder and one count of robbery, both second-degree felonies. He will be sentenced Jan 11. Koda Quest Lanza, 17, St. George, pleaded guilty in August to first-degree murder, and the charge of aggravated robbery was dropped.
2. KANE COUNTY, Jan. 18 — Douglas Jarina, 28, was shot and killed by a friend. His friend, James Perkins, then committed suicide. Both men were from Las Vegas at a cabin about 40 miles east of Cedar City preparing for a family gathering.
3. WEST VALLEY CITY, Jan. 27 — Amy Jensen, 29, was shot to death by her common-law husband, Chad Hendrickson, 27, in a murder-suicide. The two had a history of domestic violence. They apparently argued on the way home from a club. Once they were home, she grabbed a gun and accidently fired one shot. No one was hit. Relatives who had been talking on the phone with Jensen said the argument then seemed to calm down. The next day, however, the couple was found dead in the kitchen. They had two children together.
4. OREM, Jan. 27 — Miguel Ruelas, 39, was found shot to death in his apartment in a four-plex. Police have searched for Ruelas' roommate, Arturo Daniel Vaila-Solis, 24, since the incident but believe he may have returned to Mexico.
5. TAYLORSVILLE, Feb. 5 — Salote Otutaha, 22, died from multiple stab wounds to her heart at an apartment near 4730 South and 2200 West. Ailine Tauteoli, 26, was charged with homicide, a first-degree felony. Authorities believe Tauteoli and Otutaha argued before the stabbing and had fought at a social gathering previously. The case was still tied up in court proceedings and motions in December, and the preliminary hearing had not been completed.
6. SALT LAKE CITY, March 22 — Maria Trinidad-Gonzales, 33, Salt Lake City, was found dead in a bedroom closet in her former apartment on Redwood Road. The woman had lived in the apartment with Roberto Vega, but they had recently separated. She reportedly went to the apartment that day to retrieve a few items. Vega's car was later spotted in Mexico but investigators are still searching for him.
7. MAGNA, April 20 — Joseph P. Morgado, 35, was shot and killed with a handgun in his house on 8500 West after an apparent domestic dispute. Morgado's wife, Pamela H. Morgado, 37, called police and originally said she accidentally shot him. She was later charged with murder, a first-degree felony, or in the alternative, manslaughter, a second-degree felony. A ruling is expected Jan. 9 whether Morgado will stand trial.
8. SALT LAKE CITY, May 4 — Amy Tavey, 22, was kidnapped, shot multiple times and her body dumped in the Jordan River by a man who was apparently seeking revenge on her male companion. Tavey and Keith Williams were invited to a party. The party was a rouse, and when they arrived, they were jumped and separated. Williams managed to escape. Darius Peni Malaga, 20, was charged with criminal homicide, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery, all first-degree felonies. He was arrested in Las Vegas. Tony Peta, 18, and Raymond Wallace, 21, were charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping, also first-degree felonies. A jury trial for Malaga is scheduled for January.
9. SALT LAKE CITY, May 17 — Justin B. Davis, 30, was found beaten to death on the floor of his house near 2500 South and 700 East. Pirela Orlando, 20, was arrested for investigation of criminal homicide. Investigators believe drugs may have played a role in the homicide.
10. SALT LAKE COUNTY, May 30 — Enrique Sanchez-Chavez, 41, was shot and killed inside his house near 3800 South and 2000 East. Guillermo Sandigo, 35, his brother-in-law, was charged with murder, a first-degree felony, and attempted murder, a second-degree felony. He was separated from his wife who was living with her children at her mother's house. Sandigo allegedly went to the house looking for her. Chavez was shot. The homicide sparked a standoff and 14-hour manhunt. His next scheduled court appearance is in January.
11. SPRINGVILLE, June 9 — Cassandra Killpack, 4, died after being forced to ingest large quantities of water as a form of discipline. Her adoptive parents, Richard Killpack, 34, and Jennete Killpack, 26, were charged with child-abuse homicide. The medical examiner found cuts on her lips, indicating force was used in administering the water. The official cause of death was water intoxication.
12. UTAH STATE PRISON, June 14 — Archie Fernandez, 51, was found dead in his medium security cell after an apparent fight with another inmate. Prosecutors believe he was punched in the face numerous times, and they charged his cellmate, Jeffery Wayne Paschall, 28, with murder, a first-degree felony. Fernandez was serving time for manslaughter and was scheduled for release about two months before his death. Paschall was serving time for drug possession.
13. OGDEN, June 22 — Jesse A. Martinez, 12, was shot and killed in Ogden's Monroe Park while attending a baby shower with family and church members. Police say Martinez was the innocent victim of a stray bullet during a gunfight involving gang members a block away. Wilver Gonzalez was charged with homicide and is believed to have fled to Guatemala. Two people involved in the fight were arrested on other charges.
14. MURRAY, June 24 — Salem Corey Hogan was shaken by his father when he was 2 months old in October 2000. His father, Christopher Alan Hogan, 23, was sentenced to prison. When Salem died this year, prosecutors filed a charge of child-abuse homicide, a second-degree felony. The medical examiner said death was due to injuries resulting from the shaking. Prosecutors say the charge does not constitute double jeopardy. A hearing is scheduled for March.
15. SPANISH FORK, July 8 — Sharee Lana Hatch, 32, was shot and killed in her bedroom. Police arrested her estranged husband, Robert Steven Hatch, for investigation of murder. The case is being screened by the Utah County Attorney's Office. The trial is scheduled for April.
16. OGDEN, July 24 — Andrew Joseph David Tilt, 5 months, was squeezed to death. The medical examiner said Andrew had broken ribs that were healing and some that had already healed. His father, Patrick Tilt, was booked into the Weber County Jail on a charge of criminal homicide. The case is scheduled to go to trial in March.
17. OGDEN, Aug. 26 — Yasmine Moody, 3, died from an infection caused by severe child abuse. Her parents, Craig and Sawson Whitelaw, were charged with homicide in November. The parents eventually pleaded guilty to first-degree homicide to avoid a possible death sentence. They are scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 6.
18. LAYTON, Aug. 31 — Lacey Lawrence, 6, was killed in an arson fire. Mark Anthony Ott, 38, who has a history of domestic violence, was in the middle of a bitter divorce and custody battle with his wife, Donna. He went to her house, allegedly stabbed Sarah Gooch, 17, and Allen Lawrence in an act of rage and then set the house on fire. Lawrence's body was discovered after the fire was extinguished. Ott was arrested in Idaho after slashing his wrists. After being treated at an Idaho hospital, he was extradited to Utah and charged with aggravated homicide, aggravated arson, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault and theft. Ott's next hearing is Jan. 10.
19. SOUTH JORDAN, Sept 2 — Sharon N. Hogan, 47, was shot during a domestic dispute at the house she shared with husband, ex-Utah Highway Patrol trooper Larry Dale Hogan, 55. Police believe Larry Hogan then turned the gun on himself. Police cited Larry Hogan for domestic violence just hours before the shootings.
20. KEARNS, Sept. 15 — Martin Suarez, 27, died of a gunshot wound to the chest at his home near 4000 West and 5500 South in an apparent domestic dispute. Salt Lake County sheriff deputies had visited the home about four hours before the shooting for a domestic dispute between Suarez and his wife, who was cited. The wife's foster sister, Lynette Michelle Ironcloud, 30, later returned to the house and Suarez was shot. Ironcloud was charged with homicide, a first-degree felony.Her next scheduled court appearance is in February.
21. OGDEN, Sept. 21 — Weber State University student Daniel David Montgomery, 22, was stabbed multiple times following an argument with another group of people. Ivan Richard Rios, 18, a known gang member, was arrested in connection with the homicide. A motion hearing is scheduled for Jan 3.
22. WASATCH COUNTY, Sept. 21 — Serafin Compos Godinez, 42, was shot and killed at an apartment complex near the Jordanelle Reservoir. An arrest warrant was issued for Ignacio Escobar. Godinez was shot in the chest following an argument. Escobar lived with Edith Morales, who was arrested for obstruction of justice after allegedly lying to police. Investigators believe Escobar fled to Mexico.
23. LAYTON, Sept. 27 —A 20-month-old girl, whose name has not been released, was shaken to death. Her aunt, Raynette Marian Olsen, 29, was charged with child-abuse homicide, a second-degree felony. Olsen was babysitting several children but was not a licensed day-care provider. The case is still tied up in court.
24. PORTAGE, Sept. 27 — Hunters found the body of Timothy Spencer Lords, 19, Pocatello, Idaho, in the middle of a dirt road near the I-15 Portage exit. Jared Mendoza, 20, and Jerime Anderson, 25, were charged with homicide, a first-degree felony. Both men were arrested in Idaho and are awaiting extradition to Utah.
25. SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 29 — Alan Rees Caddow, 47, was stabbed multiple times at an apartment near 300 South and 300 East. Christopher Michael Yabes, 30, and Robert Keisner, 39, were charged with murder, a first-degree felony. Caddow reportedly argued with the men prior to the homicide. A court hearing is scheduled for January.
26. SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 30 — Casiano Matoes, 28, was shot just after 6 a.m. as he left his house to go to work, police said. No arrest has been made in the case. One witness told police he saw a man wearing dark pants and a dark hooded sweatshirt run from the scene and climb into a small, dark-colored car. No motive for the slaying is known.
27. SPANISH FORK, Oct. 2 — Brenda Lee Lundell, 45, was beaten to death. John Vinanti, 39, her husband of four months, is accused of beating her in a drunken rage, wrapping her body in a blanket and stuffing it under his bed. Lundell's body was discovered by her son. Vinanti was arrested a short time later. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January.
28. FIELDING, Box Elder County, Oct. 10 — Jammie Richards, 17, was shot in the head and her body dumped in a ditch near a church. Mark Jensen, 39, Hyrum, was arrested and charged with aggravated homicide. He could get the death penalty if convicted. According to court documents, Jensen may have believed Richards was a police informant. He also falsely reported that he was Richards' father, according to court documents. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 20.
29. SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 14 — Jacinto Ruiz was shot and killed by a man in an alley at Glendale Plaza, a west-side Salt Lake shopping center. Investigators said it appeared the shooter was selling phony immigration green cards, Social Security cards and other forms of identification, but they do not have a suspect or motive in the case.
30. WEST JORDAN, Nov. 18 — West Jordan police officer Ronald Wood, 39, was shot and killed by Justin Van Roekal. The 17-year-old high school student ambushed Wood as he entered a park near 2300 West and 7500 South. After fleeing the scene and trying to hijack a vehicle, Van Roekal committed suicide when confronted by a police officer. Van Roekal and another teen were suspected in a series of aggravated robberies.
31. SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 24 — Ruben A. Salinas, 20, Salt Lake City, was shot and killed while driving on Redwood Road near I-80. Jose Avilles, 17, and Jose Torres, 16, were each charged with two counts of criminal homicide, a first-degree felony. Although they are teens, they will face trial as adults. Police believe the shooting may have been a case of rivaling gangs and mistaken identity. The car Salinas was driving was not his but was used in a shooting incident earlier that week.
32. SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 1 — Tony Fuailemaa, 25, was shot and killed following a concert outside Club Xscape near 65 West and 100 South. Several undercover officers were nearby and witnessed the shooting. Following a chase, four men were taken into custody. The shooting is believed to be gang related.
33. SALT LAKE COUNTY, Dec. 1 — Kellie Nelson, 23, was abducted in front of her home near 4200 South and 1300 West, killed by blunt trauma to her throat and her body set on fire off of I-80. Sally Ann Krivanek, an ex-girlfriend of Nelson's live-in boyfriend, Kevin Wolters, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and desecration of a dead body. A motive for the slaying has not been revealed by prosecutors.
34. DUCHESNE COUNTY, Dec. 9 — Lloyd A. Harry Jr., 46, is accused of shooting and killing his ex-wife, Rosemary Kramer, 63, in Duchesne County. He also is accused of driving around for three days with her body in his car before disposing of it near Elko, Nev. He was picked up by Nevada police after becoming boisterous and claiming he had killed his wife. Kramer's body was discovered Dec. 12. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 14.
35. ST. GEORGE, Dec. 23 — Lyman James Platt, 38, Ivins, was shot to death at a local golf store. Police believe robbery may be a motive in the crime.
36. SANDY, Dec. 27 — Cedric Yanito, 23, was stabbed after an argument over beer. Yanito and his 17-year-old cousin had been drinking. Yanito hit the teen in the face with a golf club before the teen fought back and stabbed him in the chest with a knife. Yanito later died at University Hospital. The teen was booked into juvenile detention for investigation of criminal homicide.
37. WEST VALLEY CITY, Dec. 28 — Loretta Romero, 38, was shot and killed after an argument with her live-in boyfriend in their apartment. Police say Craig Veale, 43, shot Romero at close range with a shotgun. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and charged with criminal homicide, a first-degree felony.
38. SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 29 — Anthony Ray Mondragon died from head injuries after getting into a fight with another man. Mondragon was reportedly drinking with other people at a transient camp near the Jordan River Bridge at 1200 West and North Temple when he fought with another man and was pushed onto some rocks. Police are still looking for the attacker.
The following deaths are still being investigated as homicides but have not been officially ruled as such:
1. MOAB, Sept. 15 — The body of Steven Simons of Colorado Springs was pulled from the Colorado River near Moab. The man was found with a gunshot wound to his head. Detectives said it is still undetermined whether Simons died as a result of homicide or suicide.
2. SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 21 — Anivar Canales, 36, died from severe head trauma. Canales was found lying on the sidewalk near 900 West and 200 South. He was taken to the hospital where he died two days later. The case has not officially been ruled a homicide, but detectives are calling it suspicious and say it is still an open investigation.
