Seven years ago in February, BYU reeled in a class that was deemed the best in the Western Athletic Conference and one of the best in the nation. So how did it fare overall? You be the judge.

BEN ARCHIBALD, OL

After redshirting in 1996, was backup tackle as redshirt freshman behind John Tait. Served mission, then returned and was a two-year starter. Named Outland Trophy candidate before 2002 season. In fall camp, he broke his leg and missed all of '02 campaign. Is appealing NCAA for one more season of eligibility.

BRANT DIEDIKER, LB

Never lettered at BYU. Twin brother of Brock Diediker, also a member of this class.

BROCK DIEDIKER, FB

Never lettered at BYU. Twin brother of Brant Diediker, also a member of this class.

JUSTIN ENA, LB

Two-year starter at middle LB was named first-team All-Mountain West as senior. Signed a free agent contract with Philadelphia last spring and played with Eagles in 2002.

BRET ENGEMANN, QB

Enrolled in 1999, after mission, and was a starter for part of 2000 before suffering season-ending shoulder injury. Redshirted in 2001 and started half of the 2002 season. Engineered largest second-half comeback in school history versus Utah State. Was 4-5 as a starter. Left school a year early to pursue pro career.

*CHRIS ELLISON, S

Was key contributor to '96 squad. Injured in first game of '97 season and was granted medical redshirt. Started every game in '98 and was named honorable mention All-WAC.

MARKIS ERVIN, CB

Native of Waco, Tex., never qualified.

KEVIN FETERIK, QB

Started most of the 1997 season as a sophomore (he never redshirted) and was the starter in '98 and '99. Finished career No. 5 on BYU's career passing yardage list (8,065) and No. 9 on career touchdown pass list (53). Was 21-12 as a starter.

MARGIN HOOKS, WR

Finished career No. 2 on BYU's all-time receiving leaders' list with 2,841 yards, 225 yards behind Eric Drage. Had 189 career receptions, 15 shy of Matt Bellini's record of 204. Was on Miami Dolphins' practice squad in 2002.

BEN HORTON, WR

Was one of BYU's top pass-catchers for three seasons, from 1998-2000.

RONNEY JENKINS, RB

Played as a freshman in 1996 and rushed for 733 yards. Redshirted in 1997 following honor code violation. In 1998, he enjoyed one of the best rushing seasons in Cougar history (1,307 yards) and tied a BYU record with five touchdowns in a single game. He left school following more standards violations. Transferred to Northern Arizona and played there for one season. Signed as free agent with San Diego Chargers and has been with the Chargers for past three seasons as kick return specialist.

JASON KEO, RB

Died in an automobile accident two months before he would have reported to fall camp in '96.

JASON LOERZEL, WR

Did not qualify out of high school. Never played at BYU.

MICHAEL MADSEN, S

Was a solid DB for three years for the Cougars, finishing his career as a junior in 2002. He will not play his senior season; will attend graduate school instead.

*BRIAN McKENZIE, RB

In two seasons, gained 1,954 yards, including a 1,000-yard effort in 1997. He also scored 23 career touchdowns for the Cougars. He and Jenkins provided BYU with a powerful one-two punch on the ground in 1996.

NIKIA McKINNEY, DB

Due to injuries, never lettered at BYU.

JOHN MOALA, TE

Had weight trouble and played sparingly in 1996 and 1997. Played for the 1-25 basketball team at the end of his freshman season. Had academic issues before 1998 season and never played for Cougars again.

LARRY MOEAKI, OL

Never lettered at BYU.

*OMARR MORGAN, CB

Two-year starter nicknamed "The Blanket" for his cover skills. He teamed with Tim McTyer in 1996 to form what may have been the best CB duo in BYU history.

HANS OLSEN, DL

Started 26 games over three seasons and earned All-MWC honors as a senior in 2000. Spent the 2002 season with the Indianapolis Colts.

ANDREW ORD, RB

Viewed as an H-back coming out of high school, he was switched to WR. Saw significant playing time in 2001 and 2002.

DANNY ROBINSON, LB

After redshirt season, he left school following an arrest in spring, 1998.

*AARON RODERICK, WR/punt returner

Caught 25 passes for four touchdowns and was the primary punt returner for the 1998 squad.

*DARIN SAGAPOLU, OL

Due to injuries, he never lettered at BYU.

WILL SNOWDEN, RB

CHRIS WATKINS, DL

Promising all-stater from Arizona struggled with injury problems, which forced him to quit football after lettering in 1999 and 2000.
