TAYLORSVILLE — A 42-year-old woman and her 8-year-old granddaughter were transported to local hospitals after a pickup apparently lost control at 35 mph, broke through a concrete bridge and landed in a canal.

Several drivers saw the accident shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, off Redwood Road and 4600 South, and helped the woman and girl from the pickup. The pickup was in about 3 feet of water, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Jay Southam said.

Investigators believe the woman was driving south on Redwood and attempted to turn left on Conifer Way (4605 South). For an unknown reason, the driver was unable to make the turn. The pickup went through the intersection and crashed through a bridge over the canal, landing in the water, Southam said.

The woman and her granddaughter were seat-belted in which restrained them, probably preventing further injury. The woman was airlifted to University Hospital in serious condition. The girl was transported by ambulance to Cottonwood Hospital in fair condition, Southam said.
