1905 ~ 2003

LaDrue (Hap) David Varney, 98, died October 12, 2003 at his home in American Fork.

He was born in American Fork, Utah, January 5, 1905 to James and Rose Dorton Varney. He grew up and attended school in American Fork. Hap married Elva Ruth Smith August 18, 1926 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Hap and Elva were married for 71 years before Elva passed away May 15, 1997.

Hap was a life long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions. He was a volunteer fireman for American Fork City for over 70 years and had served as Fire Chief. He was an avid sportsman all his life, and one of his great joys was raising championship bloodline English setter dogs. He was a master gardener and shared the vegetables, fruits and flowers with everyone. He was employed at Chipman's Mercantile and as a custodian for the Alpine School District. His grandchildren remember fondly all the activities he did with them.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter, Morris (Elaine) Smith, Provo, Utah; David (Earlene) Varney and Coral (Robert) Hicks, Pleasant Grove, Utah; a special grandson David LaDrue (Alisa) Varney, Layton, Utah; 15 grandchildren, 57 great-grand-children and four great-great-grand-children. Hap was preceded in death by one son, James, his parents and seven brothers and sisters, James Lloyd, Gladys Martha (Niron) Fowler, Lela (Noble) Evans, Joseph Basil, Ralph Dorton, Thelma Rose (Robert) Marrott, Leland Stanford.

Services will be held Friday, Oct. 17, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the LDS 8th Ward Church, 300 North 100 East, American Fork, Utah. Friends and family may call Thursday evening 6-8 p.m. at Anderson and Sons Mortuary, 49 East 100 North American Fork and 9:45 to 10:45 prior to services at the Church.
