Donna Lou Morgan, the Salt Lake Tribune's food writer and editor for 34 years, died Tuesday of cancer. She was 75.
Mrs. Morgan, whose encyclopedic knowledge of food helped generations of Utah residents achieve perfection in the kitchen, began her newspaper career in 1955 working in the Tribune's library, where news stories and photos were indexed and filed. Recognized as a good writer and an even better cook, she soon became food editor and wrote under the pen name Bonnie Lake.
Eventually, in the 1970s, Tribune editors saw the nom de plume for the anachronism it was, and Donna Lou Morgan became a Utah household name.
After retiring in 1994, she continued to write a column until 1999.
For years, Mrs. Morgan filled a weekly food section with recipes, tips and profiles of the state's best cooks. She wrote two popular cookbooks.
The funeral will be at noon Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Holladay 2nd Ward, 2065 E. 4675 South. Burial will be at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery.
